New computer software has allowed us to actualize works of landscape architecture that could have never been designed in the past using traditional drawing methods. Designers of the built environment have embraced new ideas and forms of virtual representations to present work which has evolved the landscape architecture profession in many ways. The drawing ability of designers is no longer a limit in expressing their imaginations due to new forms of digital art.
Architectural design and the Development of Place Attachment & Identity
As one of the most important aspects of design, the ability to successfully convey ideas to clients is now easier than ever. The concept of pure creation is now placed at the finger tips of skilled computer artists who can make any idea come to life.
It is a place that encompasses all the senses almost equally. Through designing and researching each space I realised how interconnected the senses are with one another.
When designing a building or space the architect needs to ask themselves — How would one experience this space if they were to be blind or deaf for example. This led me to realise that there is a gap right from the onset of the project.
The senses need to be considered right at the beginning of any project, whether it be a private or public space. If the senses were to be considered right from the onset of the project architects would soon realise that it would resolve issues further on in the design phases as this can be achieved in such simple gestures. The drawings are illustrations of both the sense and its architecture on site.
Using these drawings I am able to interpret how the vibrations are affected on site at varying scales.
The sense of place in architecture
Through these series of details, my intention is to interpret and experience the space differently than what another person may interpret the space. Each gaze of each space may be interpreted differently. In my project, this site will encompass sounds of cargo ships departing and arriving into the island. The sounds amplitude above and below the Atlantic Ocean and will be a landscape that is activated through routes of sound and performances. Through vibrations, sounds, song and music events would propagate as audible mechanical waves of pressure and displacement through a medium, in this case, water.

When those waves are bounced between carefully aligned surfaces, they can create what is known as a standing wave, in which the total pressure from the original wave and its reflection cancel each other out. Objects placed at stops along the wave with the lowest amplitude, known as node points, tend to stay put.
Soundproofist – a practical approach to raising awareness about sound around us.
The second space edges from the beach in Plateau into the Atlantic Ocean and is an environment where sounds are translated into textures and surfaces. Within the Cape Verdean culture, aromatic plants have been used as remedies for thousands of years and various cultures have an extensive knowledge about their medicinal properties.
Place, being a product of personal perceptions, makes the establishment of such an inevitably subjective endeavor. As an outsider, and in many cases a wanderer, there are spatial qualities and characteristics that present themselves during my own experiences that would otherwise go unnoticed by the native eye. Channeling such circumstances, and utilizing architecture, due to both passion and educational requirement, this thesis works to concretize uncategorized and unrecognized space by providing and establishing a place that is a result, a response, and a means of reinsertion into the Dutch landscape.
This thesis proposes an architectural approach to place-making.
Sense of Place
It explores the process of narrative within the application of small scaled and curated installation spaces so to find a means in which architecture can create a place experience. The research investigates how a series of architectural interventions can establish a sense of place; a sensual experience that allows both person and place to be intertwined and resultantly defined. The aim is to better understand the relation of users to space and place so to comprehend that which is necessary to convert one into the other respectively. The objective is to design an architectural intervention that creates place within a placeless space by reviving and revealing the hidden aspects that are ever existent in space but gone unexperienced.
The research reveals the layers that make up place and how it can be identified, established and experienced.
